Good Night's Sleep, Exercise Protect from Breast Cancer?

Women who exercise regularly, and get at least seven hours of sleep each night, can significantly reduce their risk of breast cancer. The combination is important. Women, who exercise without needed slumber, put themselves at higher risk. The findings come from the American Association for Cancer Research, presented at the Seventh Annual International Conference on Frontiers in Cancer Prevention Research.

Honda Walking Assist Device Supports Bodyweight

Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans: Do Aerobics

Tufts University's Miriam E. Nelson, PhD, served as vice-chair of the advisory committee for the new Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans written by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Nelson is Director of the John Hancock Center for Physical Activity and Nutrition and Associate Professor of Nutrition at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts.

Fitness and Exercise Prevent Fatty Liver Disease

It’s easy to go to the gym and exercise on a regular basis right after a person buys the gym membership. It’s also easy to skip the gym one day, then the next day and the day after that. A new University of Missouri study indicates that the negative effects of skipping exercise can occur in a short period. The researchers found that a sudden transition to a sedentary lifestyle can quickly lead to symptoms of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (hepatic steatosis), which affects at least 75 percent of obese people.

Getting Started

Cardio or Weights?
You'll burn calories doing both kinds of exercise, but if you want to lose 50lbs or more, you should spend most of your exercise time doing aerobics, or cardiovascular exercises. Cardiovascular training done at a moderate level is a great fat burner, and you should gradually increase your intensity over time. The most important thing is to elevate your core body temperature, which you'll know is happening when you begin to sweat. As time goes on, it will take you longer to start sweating, and this is when it's time to increase your intensity. For example, if you are walking for cardio, you can increase the intensity by walking a bit faster or walking up hill. Ideally, you'll want to do some weight training along with your cardio, because this will improve your body composition by increasing your muscle mass, which helps you burn more calories throughout the day.
